What It’s Really Like Running a Tour Business with My Fiancé

EAST MEET WEST

If you walked into our office on any given Tuesday, you’d probably catch us mid-conversation—or mid-silence—finishing each other’s sentences.

Andy and I often joke that we share our own private “Bluetooth connection.” It’s almost spooky how often one of us will speak aloud the exact thought, itinerary tweak, or dinner idea the other was just mulling over. Whether we’re fine-tuning a guest’s journey or deciding where to stop for coffee on a road trip through Northern Vietnam, our minds just click.

And as if sharing a life and a business wasn’t exciting enough, we recently got engaged! So Andy isn’t just my business partner and teammate—he’s my husband-to-be.

The Truth About Cross-Cultural Relationships

Let’s be real for a moment: cross-cultural partnerships can be hugely challenging for both parties.

When two people come from entirely different corners of the world, subtle differences in communication, family expectations, conflict resolution, and daily habits can easily create friction. Building a life together—and planning a future as husband and wife—requires an incredible amount of patience, humility, and genuine understanding.

Fortunately, I had a 20-year head start.

Having spent two decades living in Indonesia before moving to Vietnam, Southeast Asian life wasn’t new to me. Those twenty years taught me how to read between the lines, navigate local social etiquette, and embrace the fluid, community-centered rhythm of life in this part of the world.

Because my heart and soul were already deeply embedded in Southeast Asia, adapting to Vietnamese culture didn’t feel like a shock—it felt like stepping into a familiar room with a slightly different accent. I genuinely love and respect the traditions, values, and daily customs here, which makes balancing our lives together feel natural rather than a tug-of-war.

How Our Dynamic Shapes Andy’s Vietnam Experiences

This blend of perspectives isn’t just the secret sauce of our relationship—it’s the backbone of Andy’s Vietnam Experiences.

When we design a journey for our guests, we’re looking at it through two very distinct, complementary lenses:

  1. Andy’s Unfiltered Local Expertise: Andy brings a lifelong connection to Vietnam, an instinctual understanding of local logistics, and deep-rooted relationships with local families, artisans, and guides across the country. He knows the secret spots that aren’t on any map.
  2. My Western Expat Perspective: After 20 years running tour operations, I know exactly what Western travelers need to feel relaxed, safe, and truly taken care of. I understand the small details that matter—from comfortable pacing and clear communication to dietary care and seamless comfort throughout the day.

Where Andy sees a hidden mountain village, I see how to weave it smoothly into a day’s drive without leaving guests exhausted. Where I see an opportunity for cultural immersion, Andy knows the exact family whose home we should visit for an authentic cup of tea.

The Magic in the Middle

Running a travel business together—and building our future side-by-side—means we get to share the absolute best of both worlds with the people who travel with us. Our guests don’t just get a tour guide or a booking agent; they get a team that communicates seamlessly behind the scenes (thanks to that Bluetooth connection!) to make sure every detail feels effortless.

Cross-cultural partnerships take heart and humor, but when you find that sweet spot of mutual respect, shared passion, and love, there’s nothing quite like it.

An Absolutely Amazing Experience with Andy’s Tours! 🇻🇳 As a Westerner holidaying in Vietnam, I came across Andy’s Tours and had the pleasure of spending 20 days touring with Andy and Natalie, two of the loveliest people you could ever meet! The experience was absolutely awesome from start to finish. We were so well looked after and taken to some truly unique, exciting and beautiful places that made the whole trip unforgettable. Their knowledge of Vietnam, the local culture, traditions and way of life made the experience even more special. The scenery and countryside were absolutely breathtaking, and it was wonderful to experience the real Vietnam beyond the usual tourist spots. Andy and Natalie go above and beyond to make sure you have an incredible experience, and you can really see the passion they have for what they do. I would do another tour with them in a heartbeat! We’re already looking at returning next year to explore more of Vietnam with them. From everything we’ve experienced and seen, Andy’s Tours is one of the best tour companies operating out of Hoi An and the surrounding areas. If you’re planning a trip to Vietnam, do yourself a favour and get in touch with Andy and Natalie. You’ll be in fantastic hands! Thank you both for such an unforgettable experience. We can’t wait to come back! ❤️🇻🇳

Having a mixed relationship on any level can be challenging at times but really no different to any other relationship. Having been in a cultural different relationshio myself before hold so many other challenges when it's not your country. Not only do you have to learn the culture, a new language but also opposite ways of seeing the world. If you have found your ying to your yang, bravo. We can only hope and dream for harmony in any relationship. If it works, it works. Every relationship takes work and sacrafice. Andy's tours look amazing.
