My Biggest Hurdle Moving from Indonesia to Vietnam

Trading Fluency for Fire

I am an Australian by birth, but my heart and soul are entirely embedded in Asian culture and lifestyle.

Spending 20 incredible years living in Indonesia wasn’t just a chapter in my life—it shaped who I am. During those two decades, I operated my own tour company, became fluent in Indonesian, deeply understood the cultural nuances, and found a sense of rhythm and ease in daily life. I felt independent, confident, and profoundly connected to the travel industry and community around me.

Then, 14 months ago, I moved to Vietnam.

The Emotional Jolt of Starting Over

Nothing quite prepares you for the emotional jolt of going from absolute fluency to not knowing how to ask for the simplest things. Suddenly, the independence I had spent twenty years building vanished.

Navigating the beautiful, tonal sounds of Vietnamese felt like climbing a mountain. Truth be told, the language barrier became my biggest emotional hurdle. In those first few months, simply ordering a coffee or asking for directions left me feeling incredibly vulnerable, testing my deep love for this region.

But as the saying goes, life has a beautiful way of putting you exactly where you need to be.

Finding My Teammate

Amidst the overwhelming challenge of adjusting to a new language and culture, my journey took a wonderful turn. I was blessed to meet Andy.

Meeting Andy didn’t just change my life—it gave me a teammate. Today, we share our lives together and work hand-in-hand running Andy’s Vietnam Experiences, designing private, relaxed journeys that show travelers the absolute best of this vibrant country.

While Andy brings his deep local expertise and lifelong connection to Vietnam, I bring two decades of hands-on experience running tour operations in Southeast Asia. I understand what Western travelers truly need when exploring a new destination—seamless logistics, comfort, and deep cultural immersion—paired with the perspective of someone who knows exactly what it feels like to start over and fall in love with a new country from scratch.

What This Blog Is All About

I started this blog to pull back the curtain on our lives and offer honest, heartfelt advice for anyone dreaming of exploring Vietnam. I want to share the raw realities of being a long-term expat, the beautiful chaos of running a travel business, and the magic of discovering hidden corners of this country without feeling rushed.

Here is what you can look forward to next on the blog:

  • The Expat Diaries: Honest takes on adjusting to life, culture shock, and my (mis)adventures in learning Vietnamese.
  • Behind-the-Scenes: What it’s really like running private, slow-paced tours across Northern and Central Vietnam with Andy.
  • Insider Travel Guides: Hidden gems, local secrets, and practical tips you won’t find in standard guidebooks.
